Day 3️⃣ of our Tour de Connecticut was packed with some of the state’s top attractions — from Dunkin’ Park, America’s Best Double-A Ballpark and home of @hartfordyardgoats Baseball ⚾️, to historic landmarks like the State Capitol, and iconic local eats at @reins_deli 🥪 We even made our way up to Storrs, uncovering hidden gems across campus with @uconn President Radenka Maric and getting a firsthand look at the innovation driving the university forward. ⏭️

Day three was all about energy, connection, and community pride. Now, let’s take on the final 50 miles! 🚲 #tourdect

Looking back on a DAY 2️⃣ RECAP! Tuesday started off bright and early with back-to-back meetings with CI portfolio companies @veradermics_study and @inboxhealth, followed by our quarterly board meeting. 💡 Our crew of 10+ riders included partners from Purpose Built, @climatehaven.tech and @quinnipiacu, traveling with us from New Haven to Naugatuck to stop by CI portfolio company @p2science 🧪 We refueled at @frankiesct in Waterbury, a classic, family-owned Connecticut restaurant, before heading on to West Hartford. 🏙️ 110 miles done in the first two days! ✅ #tourdect

Dynamic Duo Spotlight: Michael & Shari Cantor

Today’s Tour de Connecticut spotlight features two cycling enthusiasts and passionate Connecticut leaders, CI board chair Michael Cantor and mayor of West Hartford Shari Cantor. This dynamic duo will once again hit the road with CI to explore our beautiful state from the saddle.

🌟 Michael Cantor, CI Board Chair and Partner, Cantor Colburn

Why He Rides:
We asked Mike what motivates him to keep riding. “My enthusiasm for our state… its vibrant ecosystem of growing early-stage companies, its diverse beauty and its warm, wonderful and charming residents,” he says. For him, the Tour is a chance to celebrate everything that makes Connecticut special.

Favorite Local Spot:
West Hartford Center and Blue Back Square. With its shops, restaurants and vibrant community atmosphere, Mike believes it’s one of the state’s best-run municipalities.

Most Excited For:
Beautiful coastlines and backroads through small towns and villages.

Best Memory:
One of Mike’s favorite Tour moments was riding the historic Rocky Hill–Glastonbury ferry across the Connecticut River—an experience he describes as “a walk back through time.”

🌟 Shari Cantor, Mayor of West Hartford

Why She Rides:
For Shari, the Tour is about connection and community. “It’s such a unique way to experience our state—not just the scenery, but also the energy of riding together as a group. It’s an opportunity to engage with local businesses, residents and communities along the way while sharing in the camaraderie of the ride.”

Favorite Local Spot:
Shari treasures Elizabeth Park in West Hartford, a local gem with trails, open spaces and gorgeous gardens. For her, it’s a reminder of the natural beauty Connecticut offers year-round.

Riding Hack:
Stay hydrated and don’t wait until you’re hungry to eat! “I try to keep quick, energy-rich snacks on hand and make sure to pace myself so I can enjoy the ride as much as the finish.”

Best Memory:
One of her favorite Tour memories is seeing guest riders join different sections of the route. “No matter how far someone rides, they instantly become part of the Tour family,” Shari says.

Riding the Wave: Tidal River Investors Amy and Melissa Join The Tour de Connecticut

Amy loves SoNo (South Norwalk). Once rundown, it’s now a lively district full of creativity and community. From the brick-lined streets and waterfront views to the SoNo Collection, SoNo captures Connecticut’s spirit of reinvention. Her must-visits include SoNo Sky Bar, the Maritime Aquarium, MaaMa (the first Georgian restaurant in CT), and Lazy Sister, a pan-Chinese restaurant.

How Her Mission Aligns:
“At Tidal River, we fuel women-led and underrepresented founders with capital and community,” Amy explains. “The Tour de Connecticut celebrates innovation, resilience, and momentum—the same qualities we look for in the entrepreneurs we back.”

Melissa highlights The Wave in Guilford, a new inclusive social enterprise providing job training and competitive employment for young adults with disabilities. She’s also excited that the ride will pass through Norwich Inn and Enko, an AI-driven crop health company supporting farmers.

How Her Mission Aligns:
“Tidal River is focused on supporting women and underrepresented founders while also educating and empowering women to become angel investors,” Melissa shares. “The Tour mirrors that spirit by creating space for new voices, highlighting innovation, and making sure people feel part of the journey.”

Fun Fact:
Melissa first discovered Tidal River through a Connecticut Innovations social media post—a discovery that set her on a new path as an investor and community builder.

Meet the Riders: Meet Daniel, Leland & Casey

This week’s Tour de Connecticut spotlight features three riders who bring a mix of entrepreneurial energy, hometown pride, and climate-conscious leadership to the road. From co-founding startups to championing sustainability, each of them is excited to pedal across the state and celebrate what makes Connecticut special.

🎬Daniel Caridi

Hometown: Greenwich, CT
Role: Co-Founder & CEO, Kibu

Why He Rides:
Daniel first discovered the Tour through social media clips and knew he had to join. “Any excuse to use my job as a workout is also appreciated,” he jokes. While he may not know the route inside and out, he’s excited to follow the pack and take in Connecticut’s greenery.

Pump-up Song:
“Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen — the perfect anthem for a high-energy ride.

How He Prepares:
Daniel takes a no-frills approach to training. “I did a half marathon last year with zero training. Although I couldn’t walk the next day, I still finished. I’ll be applying that same mentality here!”

💡 Leland Holcomb

Hometown: Milford, CT
Role: Senior Innovation Associate, CSAA Insurance Group

Why He Rides:
A longtime fan of the Tour, Leland knew he couldn’t miss this third ride. “It feels like the perfect full-circle moment,” he says, thanking his CI friends for giving him the chance to join. “Connecticut is beautiful, and this ride is such a special way to celebrate the people and places that make it shine.”

Pump-up Song:
While he usually rides without music, Tame Impala’s “End of Summer” has become his seasonal anthem and go-to mindset song.

Most Excited For:
Leland is especially looking forward to the Milford to New Haven section — a ride through his roots. “I have so many great memories biking around Milford and joining Folks on Spokes.”

🌎 Casey Pickett

Hometown: New Haven, CT
Role: Managing Director, ClimateHaven

Why He Rides:
“I love this state; I love spending time with CI friends; and I love biking. Where else would I want to be?” Casey says. For him, the Tour combines all three.

Favorite Local Spot:
Athletic Brewing, especially their Lemon Radler. “It tastes like summertime for fun-loving adults.”

Mission in Motion:
At ClimateHaven, Casey leads efforts to accelerate breakthrough technology solutions in energy and climate resilience. “We do this work to make the world more livable, and we love living in it while getting to know it better.”

Professors in Motion: Meet the Riders

This week’s Tour de Connecticut spotlight features two professors shaping the next generation of business leaders right here in Connecticut. Greg Reilly, interim dean of the UConn School of Business, and Whitney “Trip” Sanders, instructor of entrepreneurship and strategy at Quinnipiac University, are bringing their passion for innovation and leadership to the road.

🐺 Greg Reilly

Hometown: West Hartford, CT
Role: Interim Dean, UConn School of Business

Why He Rides:
“Riding gives me a chance to reconnect with the people and ideas moving Connecticut forward,” Greg says. “It’s easy to talk about collaboration and learning in a meeting. It’s different when you’re out on the road learning it together.” Greg considers this ride one of the best settings for leadership development.

Favorite Local Spot:
Greg recommends checking out The Bike Shop by One Love Outdoors in Willington. Shop owners Nate and Emily lead group rides every Saturday morning, building a strong community and welcoming riders of varying abilities.

How His Mission Aligns:
“At the UConn School of Business, we’re preparing builders, people who will lead, launch and grow the next generation of Connecticut companies. CI’s work, and this ride, embody that same spirit of growth and innovation.”

Fun Fact:
Greg is working toward riding in all 169 Connecticut towns, and he’s already past 120. “I’m continually impressed with the variety and beauty of our great state.”

🐱 Whitney “Trip” Sanders

Hometown: Cheshire, CT
Role: Visiting Instructor of Entrepreneurship & Strategy, Quinnipiac University School of Business

Why He Rides:
Trip has heard many stories from past rides and is eager to participate this year. He loves cycling, enjoys the Farmington Canal Trail that winds throughout Connecticut, and is also a pedal commuter to Quinnipiac. Trip joins the Tour on day two, riding from New Haven to CI portfolio company P2 Science in Naugatuck. “I’m looking forward to seeing the sights of greater New Haven and the Naugatuck Valley, a great industrial corridor for our state,” says Trip.

Pump-up Playlist:
Trip’s riding soundtrack includes Lit’s “My Own Worst Enemy,” Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger,” AC/DC’s “Back in Black,” and Lil Wayne’s “Right Above It.”

How He Prepares:
Recovering from knee surgery this summer, Trip is gradually stepping up his ride distances: 10, 15, 20 and then 25 miles, similar to triathlon or marathon training. Mentally, he focuses on appreciating each ride, often with great music or podcasts.

We’re so excited for the chance to ride alongside professors like Greg and Trip, the Huskies and Bobcats of the business classroom, who bring the same values of innovation, resilience and community to the classroom—and the road.

As the Tour de Connecticut draws closer, we’re continuing to spotlight the inspiring people behind the ride. Meet three special guest riders from CI’s portfolio: Jason Corsello (Acadian Ventures), Sipho Simela (Matrix Rental Solutions) and Eric Rosow (Conduce Health). Each brings a unique perspective, leading companies across diverse industries like healthcare, tech and venture, yet all have the same commitment to building stronger communities and pushing innovation forward.

Jason Corsello, venture leader and cycling enthusiast, is ready to join the ride for his second year in a row. On the Tour de Connecticut, Jason isn’t deploying financial capital, but personal capital—his time, energy and support.

Why He Rides:
“The Tour de Connecticut is a great opportunity to spend time with the CI team and meet new companies around the state. It’s a great way to learn more about the innovative technology and diverse startup ecosystem we have right here in Connecticut.”

🏠 Sipho Simela

Hometown: Stamford, CT
Role: Co-Founder & CEO, Matrix Rental Solutions

As co-founder and CEO of Matrix Rental Solutions, Sipho’s first Tour de Connecticut is about moving through the very neighborhoods where his company’s work is making a difference.

Why He Rides:
“At Matrix Rental Solutions, we’re building a more connected and equitable housing system across the state, and the Tour de Connecticut is a perfect metaphor for that mission. It’s about progress, momentum and community,” he says. “We’re creating bridges between residents, housing providers and housing agencies, and this ride is a reminder that transformation happens one mile, and one partnership, at a time.”

“Housing is local, and there’s no better way to connect with that reality than on two wheels,” Sipho adds. After spending plenty of time crisscrossing Connecticut by car, he’s excited to slow down and experience the state from a new perspective, not through a windshield, but at bike speed.

Hometown: Avon, CT
Role: Co-Founder & Executive Chairman, Conduce Health

“I’ve always loved cycling across our beautiful state, but what makes the Tour de Connecticut truly special is the chance to ride alongside colleagues, founders and innovators from the CI community, sharing ideas, building connections and being inspired together along the way,” he says.

“For me, riding is about community, connection and purpose. Whether it’s biking through my favorite trail in Collinsville, Connecticut, joining fellow entrepreneurs on the Tour, or completing my 17th Pan-Mass Challenge, I ride to be inspired, to give back and to be reminded that great things happen when we work together toward a common cause.”

Fun Fact:
Eric is a hobby beekeeper. “What fascinates me most is how a hive functions as a ‘superorganism,’ where each bee works selflessly for the good of the colony, a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from collaboration and shared purpose.

As the Tour de Connecticut Returns For Another Year, So Do Two Familiar Faces

Laura Dinan Haber and Paul Tyler are both joining the ride for the third year in a row, bringing with them a deep appreciation for the event’s mission and the communities it celebrates. These returning riders know the route, the rhythm, and the real reason behind the ride: to connect with the innovators, entrepreneurs, and local leaders shaping Connecticut’s future one mile at a time.

Meet Laura Dinan Haber, Innovation Brand Director at Nassau Financial Group ⚙️

Why She Rides:
Laura is returning to the Tour de Connecticut for her third consecutive year, and for her, it’s a ride that keeps giving back. “This all started with a nudge from Doug Roth (managing director of investments at Connecticut Innovations)—though he may deny it!” she says. With a front-row seat to Connecticut’s innovation ecosystem, Laura uses the ride to reflect on the state’s progress and connect with the people helping move it forward.

Local Favorite:
Laura’s go-to spot? Pratt Street in downtown Hartford. “Whether I’m grabbing a bite at Vaughan’s Public House or shopping at Hartford Prints, there’s always a cold pint and a warm smile. It’s the kind of place that puts the heart in Hartford.”

Company Connection:
At Nassau Financial Group, Laura helps lead with bold thinking and creative storytelling. “Our mantra is: Be bold. Be innovative. Be memorable,” she says. “As a member of our Triathlon Team, the Tour is a two-wheeled training ground, where personal performance meets purpose.”

Fun Fact:
Laura is a seasoned hiker, and her sixth time summiting Mount Washington was extra special…she did it alongside her identical twin sister.

Meet Paul Tyler, Chief Marketing Officer at Zinnia ⚙️

Why He rides:
Also marking his third year in the saddle, Paul sees the Tour as a perfect blend of exploration, connection, and inspiration. “There’s nothing better than going on an adventure on a bike and meeting some really interesting entrepreneurs changing the Connecticut economy,” he says. Paul thrives on the unexpected conversations and ideas that emerge between climbs and coastlines.

Local Favorite:
Paul’s Saturday mornings often start at Zumbach’s Gourmet Coffee in New Canaan, a cozy community hub that’s welcoming to bikers, classic car lovers, and conversation-seekers alike. “It’s welcoming to people with passions. Any Saturday you will find bikers and classic car owners leisurely enjoying an engaging community that is so typical of Connecticut.”

As CMO at Zinnia, a life insurance and annuity technology company, Paul is focused on transforming how people engage with financial security. “Like the Tour, we’re on a journey too – to simplify the technology behind life insurance,” he says. “Our destination is to make life insurance more accessible for everyone and help people lead a stress-free life in retirement.”

Food of CT Joins Tour de Connecticut to Spotlight Local Flavor

This year, the Tour de Connecticut is teaming up with lifestyle bloggers, content creators, and passionate foodies to spotlight local flavor and support small businesses through enhanced media exposure. We’re thrilled to announce that Allison Carasone, food reviewer, blogger, and creator of Food of CT (@food_of_ct), will be joining us along the route for a pitstop at Frankie’s, a classic, family-owned Connecticut hotspot since 1937, known for its nostalgic charm and award-winning hotdogs.

Allison launched Food of CT in 2017 with a simple but powerful goal: to support local businesses and showcase the incredible dining experiences found across Connecticut. What began as a personal passion has grown into a vibrant social media community of over 132,000 followers, all eager for her thoughtful recommendations and insider tips on where to eat across the state.

Food has always played a central role in Allison’s life. Growing up, she loved exploring new restaurants with her family, and that early love of local eats has stayed with her ever since. Hearing from the CI Team: Why the Tour Matters

“We created the Tour de Connecticut to showcase how closely connected—and uniquely ambitious—Connecticut’s innovation ecosystem really is,” said Matt McCooe, CEO of Connecticut Innovations. “This initiative is our way of celebrating founders, investors and partners who helped build something special here.”

Throughout the week, CI will host networking events and visit companies on their home turf, including Kibu, P2 Science, Athletic Brewing, and Enko.

Meet the Guest Riders: Why They Ride

As the countdown begins for this year’s Tour de Connecticut, we’re looking forward to more than just the ride. We’re celebrating the people and purpose behind every mile. This 200-mile journey across the state honors innovation, entrepreneurship, and the vibrant communities that make Connecticut thrive.

Among our riders this year are leaders who don’t just talk about impact, they live it. From shaping statewide economic policy to transforming healthcare outcomes, these individuals are deeply connected to Connecticut’s mission and momentum. We’re excited to introduce two of our guest riders: Connecticut DECD Deputy Commissioner Paul O. Robertson and Dr. Katherine Saunders, co-founder of CI portfolio company FlyteHealth.

🚴Dr. Katherine Saunders

Hometown: New York, NY

Role: Dr. Katherine Saunders is a physician, innovator, and passionate advocate for better health outcomes. As co-founder of FlyteHealth, she leads a company that’s transforming the lives of thousands of State of Connecticut employees and retirees through obesity treatment and sustainable healthcare solutions.

Why she rides: Katherine is riding out of gratitude and purpose. “I love the Connecticut Innovations team,” she says. “I jump on any opportunity to show our appreciation for their support.” Her connection to CI, and her commitment to Connecticut, runs deep. “I’m thrilled to practice what I preach by participating in the Tour,” Katherine says. Her presence on the ride is both symbolic and personal, embodying the message of health and long-term wellness she brings to her patients every day.

Local favorite: One of Katherine’s current local favorites is meal preparation and delivery service, Kinney Lane. The founder and CEO, Rachael Mahoney, uses organic ingredients and seasonal produce sourced from local farms to create delicious, prepared meals. As a working mom of three, Kinney Lane is a life saver for Katherine.

Fun fact: Although Katherine grew up in New York City, she learned to ride a bike in Connecticut. “I hadn’t been on a bike for so many years before my kids learned to ride,” she says. “Now, I love biking around our Connecticut neighborhood with them.” We call this a full-circle moment.

🚴‍Paul O. Robertson

Hometown: Greenwich, CT

Role: Paul plays a key role in shaping the future of Connecticut’s economy. As Deputy Commissioner and COO at DECD, he spends his days focused on economic growth, infrastructure, and innovation. But this fall, he’s trading the boardroom for the bike lane, joining the Tour de Connecticut to experience the state from a new perspective.

Why he rides: For Paul, the Tour is a unique way to explore the state. He says, “It’s a chance to enjoy traveling the towns with a bird’s eye view and meet with new Connecticut businesses,” he says. It’s a natural fit for someone whose work is all about strengthening local economies and communities. “The Tour de Connecticut is a great way to show why the state is a great place to live, work and play, and experience what Connecticut has to offer,” Paul explains.

A local favorite: Paul is an avid fan of the Farmington Canal Trail, a scenic path that winds from New Haven all the way to Northampton, Massachusetts. For the third year in a row, Paul will be joining the Tour de Connecticut during this portion of the statewide journey.

Fun fact: Paul is one of seven siblings—and the only male!

Five Underrated Ride Essentials That Make a Big Difference

Everyone remembers their helmet, water bottle, and bike. But what about the small things that keep you comfortable, alert, and in good spirits as the miles stack up?

Whether you’re riding across Connecticut or joining us for just one leg of the Tour de Connecticut, these are the underrated essentials you’ll be glad you packed.

1. Hat and Sunglasses

After the helmet comes off, a lightweight hat is a lifesaver. It helps keep the sun off your face, tames helmet hair, and gives you that instant post-ride reset. Pair it with a solid pair of sunglasses, ideally something polarized and lightweight, for all-day protection.

2. Cooling Towel

When the sun is high and the pavement is hot, a cooling towel can make all the difference. Wet it, wring it out, and place it behind your neck for instant relief. It’s also useful for wiping off sweat, cooling down at a rest stop, or freshening up before a post-ride meetup. Easy to pack and totally worth it.

3. Snack Pack (With Variety)

A single protein bar won’t cut it. Smart riders know to bring a variety: something salty, something chewy, something sweet. Think pretzels, fruit snacks, sour candy, trail mix, or a classic PB&J cut in halves. Organize them in zip pouches or small containers so everything stays clean and accessible. Pro tip: choose snacks you actually enjoy eating. You’ll need the morale boost by mid-afternoon.

4. Electrolyte Packets

Plain water is essential, but it’s not always enough. Riding for hours under the sun means your body is losing salt, minerals, and energy fast. Electrolyte powders or tablets can help replace what you’re sweating out. Single-serve packets are easy to toss into a small pocket or bag. Alternate them with regular water throughout the day to avoid the crash.

5. Mini First Aid Kit

You don’t need much (hopefully) —just the basics. A few Band-Aids, Advil, blister pads, and an alcohol wipe or two can make a big difference when you’re far from a rest stop. It’s also smart to throw in a lip balm with SPF and a travel-size sunscreen stick.

On the final day of our Tour de Connecticut journey, we were joined by an epic crew, including Congressman Jim Himes, former Commissioner of DECD Alexandra Daum and our CI board chair Michael Cantor. We pedaled from New Haven to Milford to enjoy an early morning NA brew with our friends at Athletic Brewing Co. 🍺 Athletic Brewing is dedicated to crafting delicious non-alcoholic beer that people can enjoy anytime and anywhere, with no worries and no hangovers. CEO and co-founder Bill Shufelt gave us a tour of their 150,000 square foot facility, the largest NA brewery in the world. After a few taste tests, we were back on the road, refreshed and ready to ride. 🚲#tourdect

Take a look behind the scenes of pitstop number two, another early meeting on day one of the Tour de Connecticut. 🚲 We hit the road from Mystic to Groton, and although our team faced some challenging, rocky terrain, we successfully made it to our meeting with ThayerMahan, a world leader in autonomous maritime solutions. 🌊 CEO Mike Connor gave us a tour of the facility, showing off the company’s cutting-edge technology, systems and products. As we get closer to snowstorm season, our CI team is reminiscing on warmer (and greener) days… Check out the first portfolio company visit of our inaugural Tour de Connecticut this past August. 🚲 We started the 200-mile trek in Mystic, where we met with Enko Chem, a company developing novel products for farmers to protect their crops from pests and disease. 🌾 Founder and CEO Jacqueline Heard filled us in on how @enkochem is shaping the future of agriculture and crop protection, and Chief Science Officer Tom Meade gave us a personal tour of their facility which includes 89,000 square feet of state-of-the-art labs and greenhouses. 🔬 After refueling with some coffee and granola bars (shoutout Enko), we were back on the road…#tourdect
